**Thiruvananthapuram:** Filmmaker Anil V. Nagendran has announced that he is ending his association with the Communist Party of India , saying that he is leaving the movement he believed in with deep pain. He made the announcement through a lengthy note posted on Facebook, in which he alleged that he could no longer continue in the party while facing what he described as repeated acts of hostility and harassment. He also apologised to the leaders and comrades who had supported and loved him.

Anil V. Nagendran is the director of Vasandhathinte Kanal Vazhikal, released in 2014, Thee, released in 2022, and the Tamil film Veeravanakkam, released in 2025.In his post, Nagendran said some people had worked against his films that presented communist ideas. He said compassion was the basic lesson of communism as he understood it, but claimed that he could no longer see that quality in the party today. He also acknowledged that many good leaders and workers remain in the movement, saying he did not want to say more out of consideration for them.

Nagendran described his family’s long association with Kerala’s communist movement. He said his grandfather was Dr. V.V. Velukkutty Arayan, whom he described as a multifaceted personality, founder of several trade unions and one of the early communists among the social reformers. His father, Adv. V.V. Nagendran, and other family members were early leaders of the undivided Communist Party and later became CPM leaders or active workers after the party split.

According to Nagendran, he released an audio cassette and book titled EMS – Jeevikkunna Ithihasam about E.M.S. Namboodiripad in 1997, while EMS was alive. He said that over the following three decades, he produced and directed several audio cassettes, books, video programmes, revolutionary-song CDs, a television series and films dealing with communist party history and leaders including P. Krishna Pillai, A.K.G., E.M.S., Lenin and E.K. Nayanar.

He said he invested his creative abilities, several crores of rupees and a significant part of his life in such works without any expectation of profit. He particularly referred to Vasandhathinte Kanal Vazhikal, which portrayed the history of popular struggles led by P. Krishna Pillai, E.M.S. and A.K.G. in building the Communist Party in Kerala.

Nagendran said the film suffered a major financial setback after its release in 2014. He stated that it had to be withdrawn following Election Commission action on a complaint alleging that it had been released for CPM election campaigning ahead of the Lok Sabha election. He also alleged that certain people, despite recognising the film’s political content and relevance, acted against it due to personal hostility.

He recalled that after the video disc of Vasandhathinte Kanal Vazhikal was released by comrade Kodiyeri in 2015, the film was screened as part of campaigns during elections, conferences and family meetings. He said the screenings became programmes at party venues across Kerala and that, although he received no financial benefit from them, he took pride in the film’s role in creating political awareness and enthusiasm.

Nagendran further alleged that the warm reception given to the film by prominent party leaders and a large number of comrades increased the hostility of some individuals towards him. He said he had tried to keep the experiences of the past 12 years from becoming known publicly.

He also referred to his 2025 Tamil film Veeravanakkam, which connected Kerala’s past history with the contemporary social situation in Tamil Nadu. He said the film featured Samuthirakani as P. Krishna Pillai and Bharath as a revolutionary in Tamil Nadu. According to Nagendran, media representatives, film critics and political leaders from both states who watched the preview described it as a suitable film for taking the sacrifice-filled struggles of the communist movement to the new generation.

However, he alleged that the hostility continued and that the doors that had opened before him were again closed. He said he could no longer continue while facing what he described as cruelty from those who opposed him.

Nagendran said the communism he understood was based on compassion towards the oppressed, the poor, the helpless and those facing discrimination based on caste, religion and colour. He concluded his statement by saying that he was stepping away after apologising to all the good leaders and comrades who had loved him.
